I’m so tired of the abortion debate.

I’m going to try to say this without name-calling, though the word “ignorant” is the thing I’m wanting to say most.

Here’s the thing about carrying a child: It’s an extreme toll on a woman’s body, and in some cases, can be extremely dangerous for both the mother and the child. In this case, I’m very convinced that abortion is the most plausible solution. If it’s going to end badly for both parties, why not do what you can to save one?

I believe abortion is a service that should most definitely be allowed to women, within a reasonable time frame of pregnancy. If you do not wish to have an abortion, the solution is simple: don’t have one. Adoption is also a sensible solution to an unwanted pregnancy.

Regardless, a woman has the right to decide what she wishes to do. It’s her body, and it affects her. If she doesn’t want something living inside of her, siphoning off her nutrients and resources (i.e. a parasite, in short), who is to tell her she has to play host?

And all the people protesting to “defund Planned Parenthood” need to do research. Planned Parenthood does so much more than “fund abortions”. They offer testing and treatment for STDs, screenings for certain types of cancers, counseling, sex education (which most of us aren’t even getting in schools anymore), contraceptive surgeries (such as vasectomies and tubal ligations), and provide contraceptives all at affordable prices. They are not just simply an “abortion clinic”, they are a necessary resource in today’s society and economy. Really people, choose: contraceptives or unwanted pregnancies leading to abortion?

By defunding Planned Parenthood, one can only predict that there will be an increase in accidental teenage pregnancies, and it outlawed, abortions will become much riskier, with lower health codes or even extreme at-home solutions.

Like it or not, people will have abortions. However, studies show that currently, abortions are safer than giving birth. If abortion becomes outlawed, this will most certainly not be the case, and the woman’s life will be at risk.

Most arguments against abortion are from a religious or a certain type of moral standpoint. This argument goes that abortions “kill babies” “kill humans” “don’t give THEM the choice” and is “murder”. The controversy lies in the question “what qualifies as a ‘person/human’”? Some people argue that the fetus is a person once it becomes a fetus; some say when it gains consciousness/starts to have brainwaves. I believe that most abortions are performed before the 20th week of pregnancy, after which it’s considered “late-term”. Most studies show that the fetus starts to become aware around the 24-28 week mark, meaning that abortions performed before the 20 week mark really shouldn’t affect the fetus as far as “pain” and “emotion” are concerned.

Really, it comes down to this: by banning abortions, you’re taking away a woman’s right to choose what to do with her body, which could probably be considered as slavery by some people. Others may argue that abortions are taking away the baby’s right, but to them I say this: Medically and scientifically, the fetus, at least until 20-28 weeks, is not a person.

If it comes to a vote, I beg you all, especially woman to think: How would you feel if someone was telling you what to do with your body, and you had no say in the matter what so ever.

I hope I came across coherently in my thoughts. I realize I didn’t touch on a few subjects including the woman/family’s financial situation, more about religion, and a broader view on sexism. I’m sure if you search on the internet, you would find those. I would also like to end this by saying I in no way consider myself a feminist; however, I consider myself a citizen of the United States, and to have any rights of mine taken from me is a breach of everything this country stands for.
